Open Pit Pot Firing
Posted 27 August 2014, 7:59 am ADT
Each summer Cookie Lethbridge returns to her roots in Labrador and brings clay pots that she makes in her home studio. We gather at Mealy Mountain Gallery, decorate the pots with leaves, flowers, paint, jelly beans, whatever we find, and wrap them in paper, gently place them in the fire pit, cover with sawdust, old wood and boughs. We try to have the fire lit by 11am and this year we didn't wait 24 hours to take the pots out of the pit. This year we removed our masterpieces by 7 pm. After scrubbing, admiring, and photographing we went home happy.
Did I mention food? Well, any gathering here means we have to eat. Cookie supplied us with some of her home baked tarts and pies and there was very little left for her to take home to share with Mike.
