Inuit Women Tattoos

Down through the ages Inuit women have been adorning their body with tattoos. Over the last century the Inuit Women of Labrador have lost most of this tradition. There have been some evidence of the women still tattooing along the coast in the early 1800. There has been no later documentation.

Today some of the imagery for the tattoos are showing up in embroidery patterns. I had been introduced to it a few years ago when I was in Greenland and the Eastern Nunavut Land. Then, while living in Nain in 2016/17, I was intrigued with the history of the tattooing in Labrador. I captured the images in silver and copper and made earrings, ulu pendants, bowls, all embellished with the line art of the Inuit Women Tattoos. My inspiration came from the embroidery patterns of Tattoos that the ladies were using in mitts and slippers. A special thank you to Peggy Anderson and Heather Angnatok for sharing.
